Location |
"Zumthor’s works without exception represent a critical coming-to-terms with the specific location. (...) The ensemble between Kornmarktstrasse / Kornmarktplatz and See-strasse has a character all of its own. It seems as if the town at this point had crept down to the Lake only with trepidation: not in closed ranks, but rather with individual ventures (...). The area in question is not a typical late 19th century development with individual well-spaced buildings (although there are certainly notable examples of such), but rather an area which has grown up slowly, with sensitive points of contact.
Peter Zumthor’s 'intervention' is decisive and sensitive in equal measure; the glass tower focuses the modest 'skyline', only this emphasis making it visible, and above all consciously visible, as such."
Friedrich Achleitner, "Peter Zumthor. Museo d'arte, Bregenz, Austria/Peter Zumthor. Art Museum, Bregenz, Austria", Domus 798, novembre/november 1997, p. 40-41

Quotation |
"The art museum stands in the light of Lake Constance. It is made of glass and steel and a cast concrete stone mass that endows the interior of the building with texture and spatial composition. From the outside, the building looks a lamp. It absorbs the changing light of the sky, the haze of the lake, it reflects lights and color and gives an intimation of its inner life according to the angle of vision, the daylight and the weather."
