DESCRIPTION

Toyo Ito Tod's Omotesando TokyoThe head office of Tod’s, located on Omotesando, Tokyo’s elegant avenue of fashion, is an L-shaped building of seven stories, characterized by façades covered with a mask of trees: an explicit choice to evoke the row of zelkovas (Japanese elms), symbol of the avenue. The surface with its continuous expanse of graphic motives envelops the whole of the building, making it stand out as a separate volume that is immediately recognizable even from a distance despite the narrowness of the street front (just 10 meters wide).

The 30-cm-thick envelope, cast in concrete, also functions as a supporting structure with an organic reticular geometry that reveals the load curve as in a tree. The 270 openings in the façades, plugged with glass and aluminum mounted flush with the surface and with no frames, vary in dimension: large expanses of glass on the lower stories and diminishing in size (but increasing in number) higher up, to meet the functional needs of the spaces.
