VILLA CELESTINA:
RESTORATION AND REBIRTH |

|
 The building was constructed in 1915 and in the early 20’s began to house the Kursaal Circle which hosted the social life of the most prominent families of the period. In 1930, it was purchased by General Attilio Teruzzi, then Chairman of the Chiefs of Staff of the Militia who entrusted its renovation to architect Vittorio Cafiero from Rome. In the course of these works characterised by a wide use of reinforced concrete, the architectural elements typical of Italian Rationalism were introduced. Through this decade, up until the war, the Villa was renamed Celestina in honour of Teruzzi’s mother, and was the venue of the large parties organised by the officer. Then, with the fall of Fascism and the end of the war, the building was claimed by the State and used first as “Forestieri” Circle, then as headquarters of the Autonomous Tourism Board, then as a dance hall and, in the 70’s, it was renovated to house a discotheque. As of 1981, Villa Celestina was closed for security problems, and so began its long decline.
 In 1998, the State Property Administration rented the structure to the Commune of Rosignano, and so began its rebirth. In 2001, a protocol agreement was signed with the University of Pisa for the restoration of the building to be utilised with scientific purposes, and in 2002 an agreement signed by the Commune, the University, and the Ministry of the Environment made it possible to receive ministry financing for one million euros. The building’s structural and conservative renovation ended in 2007, and today Villa Celestina is ready to house a Laboratory dedicated to studies in ecology and marine biology, which will be a veritable detached headquarters of the Department of Biology of the University of Pisa. It will be joined by the Commune of Rosignano’s Environmental Education Centre, financed with UE funds. The basement, first and second floors will therefore host education and research activities with University personnel and equipment, while the upper floor will be used by the Municipality for its Environmental Education Centre, as well as to organise, course, small conferences and public events.
