The statue was built in France, on the proposal of the historian Edouard de Laboulaye, and donated to the United States on the occasion of the first centenary of independence.
It was designed by the sculptor Frédéric-Auguste Bartholdi who asked his "master" Eugene Emmanuel Viollet-le-Duc to design the internal iron structure; in 1879, following the death of Viollet-le-Duc, Gustave-Alexandre Eiffel took over the design of the structure.
The transport of the 350 pieces that make up the statue took place by ship.
The base was built from 1883 to 1884 and the statue was inaugurated on October 28, 1886 by the president of the United States, Grover Cleveland. |

In 1889 the "Communauté Parisienne des États-Unis d'Amérique" donated France a scale copy of the Statue of Liberty to celebrate the centenary of the French Revolution.
The replica was designed by Frédéric-Auguste Bartholdi and is 11.50 meters high.
It was placed in Paris, in the Île aux Cygnes, on the Seine and looks towards New York. |
|
|
Frédéric-Auguste Bartholdi was inspired by the statue of Pio Fedi "Libertà della Poesia (Freedom of Poetry)", placed on the tomb of Giovanni Battista Niccolini in the Basilica of Santa Croce in Florence. |
