The artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser was famous for his use of bright vivid colours on curves and spirals. This preference can also be accounted for the architecture of the Fernwärme Wien Spittelau district heating plant building which he was predestined to design. Interesting fact: due to prejudices towards the building being not environmental-friendly, Hundertwasser hesitated. However, he was soon convinced that the machine would contribute to make Vienna's air cleaner and thus agreedto participate in that project. What Hundertwasser did was the architectural redesign of the incineration plant and the chimney of the district heating plant Spittelau. He started constructing it in 1988 and finished in 1992. Alfred Schmid executed the architecutre model in 1987. The building is made up by a tall tower having his surface being made out of a metallic material and a psychedelic looking castle. The "Fernwärme Wien Spittelau" became a tourist attraction and is considered as the town's landmark and can be seen from several points within the town. |
