BIOGRAPHICAL NOTES

The architectural practice von Gerkan, Marg and Partners was founded by Meinhard von Gerkan and Volkwin Marg in 1965. Since its inception it has grown to include four additional partners, twelve associate part-ners and more than 400 employees in ten offices in Germany and abroad.

gmp is one of the few practices with a generalist position, which takes responsibility for a project from the design idea and its realization right through to the interior design.

Their architectural interpretation is characterized by the Vitruvian ideals of solidity, longevity and beauty. Based on the understanding, architecture earns the quality of sustainability in the sense of permanence, when not only the climatic conditions and the corresponding use of materials are accounted for, but also when the house, as an envelope for the diversity of human exis-tence, is designed in an obvious manner. Above and be-yond these demands, they build in different cultural circles in accordance with certified guidelines and in consultation with the client.

In the past 45 years Meinhard von Gerkan, Volkwin Marg and their partners have planned and constructed buildings in most major German cities. They have designed small scale homes, hotels, museums, theaters and concert halls, office buildings, commercial centers and hospitals as well as research, educational and sports facilities, buildings for transportation, trade and industry buildings and master plans.

gmp became internationally known as a team of airport architects when, in 1975, the Berlin-Tegel building with its drive-in airplane terminal for "stacked parking" was established. This innovative design has been further developed to transform the departure and arrival halls at Stuttgart and Hamburg airports.

They are internationally recognized not only for their projects like the New Trade Fair in Leipzig, the Rimini Exhibition Center or the Christ Pavilion for the EXPO 2000, but also for their designs. Key examples are the designs for the reconstruction and roofing of the Olympic Stadium in Berlin, the RheinEnergieStadium in Cologne or Berlin Central Station, which was completed in 2006.

gmp has succeeded in winning more than 450 prizes in national and international competitions, among them more than 250 first prizes and a large number of awards for exemplary architecture. More than 290 buildings have been constructed by gmp worldwide.

Amongst others in China, the exhibition and congress centers in Nanning and Shenzhen, the Shanghai-Pudong museum and the Zhongguancun Cultural Center in Beijing as well as the Foshan Sports Park have been built. Further projects are the opera houses in Chongqing and Qingdao as well as the Chinese National Museum in Beijing.

In the year 2006 in Hanoi/Vietnam the National Congress Center was finished. The Museum for Urban History of Hanoi and the Headquarters of Ministry of Public and Security are finished in 2010.

In South Africa three World Cup stadiums, in Cape Town, Durban and Port Elizabeth were finished in 2009.

Von Gerkan, Marg and Partners have demonstrated town-planning competence with their visionary proposals for "Stuttgart 21" for the Deutsche Bahn, HafenCity Hamburg, and the urban master plan of Bucharest/Romania, as well as many urban projects in China, including the planning of Lingang New City for 800,000 inhabitants.

Aside from Germany and gmp is currently involved in projects in China, India, Vietnam, Brazil, Italy, Romania, Poland, the Ukraine and Latvia, to name but a few.

UMBAU. Nonstop Transformation, Hamburg (Germany), AIT-ArchitekturSalon, 5 / 27 march 2024

UMBAU, Nonstop Transformation, Hamburg, Germany, AIT-ArchitekturSalon UMBAU (conversion) means the ongoing transformation of existing structures. Given today’s climate goals, UMBAU needs to become the rule rather than the exception. The exhibition by the architects von Gerkan, Marg, and Partners (gmp) presents four of the more than sixty projects in gmp’s forty years of UMBAU experience as specific examples of current UMBAU practices thatdeal with the architectural heritage of the 20th century.

UMBAU, Nonstop Transformation, Hamburg, Germany, AIT-ArchitekturSalonWhat the projects have in common is the conceptual approach to UMBAU which, starting from a comprehensive inventory of the existing, continues and further develops the old as an architectural evolution. In practice, UMBAU must also integrate overlays and new suppositions. UMBAU is not unique, but continues into the future as a nonstop transformation, as a project of social sustainability spanning generations.

UMBAU. Nonstop Transformation debuted in Venice in 2023. At the AIT-ArchitekturSalon in Hamburg, the exhibition takes on a regional focus that includes the recently reopened Alsterschwimmhalle. The project is contextualized by the Isarphilharmonie Gasteig HP8 in Munich (in use), the Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts (under construction), the Columbus Cruise Center in Bremerhaven (planned), and a tour of all gmp’s conversions in Hamburg, from 1977 to the present.

UMBAU. Nonstop Transformation, Venezia [Venice] (Italy), Salone Verde, 19 may / 26 november 2023

gmp, von Gerkan Marg und Partner, UMBAU, Nonstop Transformation, Venezia, 2023The exhibition UMBAU, Nonstop Transformation at Salone Verde in Venice was officially opened. To start, the German Federal Minister for Housing, Urban Development and Building, Klara Geywitz, and the President of the Federal Office for Building and Regional Planning, Petra Wesseler, spoke to the audience. This was followed up with speeches by Sergio Pascolo, President of the cooperation partner Venice Urban Lab, Volkwin Marg, Founding Partner of gmp, and Stephan Schütz and Nikolaus Goetze, curators of the exhibition.

gmp, von Gerkan Marg und Partner, UMBAU, Nonstop Transformation, Venezia, 2023UMBAU (conversion) means the ongoing transformation of existing structures. Just as societies change, the requirements placed on buildings also change. In the context of this ongoing process of change, those who reuse and recycle materials and components save resources, avoid waste, and use the gray energy stored in existing buildings. Hence UMBAU, an ancient cultural technique, is gaining new relevance in the face of climate change.

For over forty years, von Gerkan, Marg and Partners Architects (gmp) have been engaging in UMBAU. The exhibition in Venice presents seven of over sixty conversion projects as specific case studies. The compilation consists of public buildings in Germany and China that exemplify the architectural practice of UMBAU. From a comprehensive exploration, concepts are developed that are based on existing structures and ensure a contemporary use. At the core of this process is always the reactivation of what exists in all its diversity.

UMBAU.Nonstop Transformation reveals these processes by taking both completed projects and those that are still in the planning phase or under construction as a basis. On display are the Berlin Olympic Stadium (completed 1936 / UMBAU 2004), the Kulturpalast Dresden (1969 / 2017), the transformation of a former transformer building in Munich (1929 / 2021) into part of the Isarphilharmonie at Gasteig HP8, concrete shell constructions like the Hyparschale in Magdeburg (1969 / 2024) and the Alster-Schwimmhalle in Hamburg (1973 / 2023). It also features the conversion of Shanghai's largest stainless steel factory (1986 / since 2021) into the Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts and the Berlin State Library at the Kulturforum (1978 / since 2019).

The exhibition traces processes of the continuous transformation of the buildings as an activity that spans generations, from the original to the UMBAU. With large-format films, models, photos, and plans, stations of this Nonstop Transformation are highlighted in multimedia and with an overarching sound installation that makes UMBAU a sensory experience in the spaces of Salone Verde.

Architecture x Fashion—A Dialogue, Hamburg (Germany), Barlach Halle K., 29 june / 12 july 2019

gmp, von Gerkan, Marg, Icicle, BarcodeAn exhibition initiated by architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partners (gmp) and the Shanghai fashion label ICICLE, places the two applied arts of architecture and fashion in a dialogue and establishes a relationship between the two disciplines. To mark 20 years of gmp in China, the exhibition will be shown in Germany from June 29 to July 12, 2019, as part of the Hamburger Architektur Sommer.

To mark 20 years of building activity in China by architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partners, the exhibition “Architecture x Fashion— A Dialogue” will come to Germany and will be shown from June 29 to July 12, 2019, as part of the Hamburger Architektur Sommer (Hamburg Architecture Summer) in Barlach Halle K. Hamburg is the second venue after Shanghai, where it was on show in 2018.

In the exhibition, fashion and architecture are juxtaposed in large photographic displays. The pairs of images are the result of cooperation between the architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partners and the ICICLE Fash- ion Group. The Shanghai fashion company took an interest in the special character of gmp’s commercial buildings, a type of building that is not normally taken much notice of, and used it as a source of inspiration for one of its collections. In addition to administration and culture buildings, in particular opera houses, industrial buildings are amongst the diverse projects carried out by gmp in China, where the practice has been active for two decades and has completed 137 commissions. The book Industrial Buildings in an Urban Context gives a detailed overview of gmp’s commercial buildings.

Using the medium of photography, the sense of proportion of the paired motifs has been taken to a dif- ferent dimension. The fashion photographs are shown larger than life, whereas the architecture images are reduced in scale. As a result, both arts become comparable—at an equal level, so to speak. In order to give visitors the opportunity not only to see but also to touch exhibits, samples of facade elements and fabric are exhibited next to the large photographs.

gmp and ICICLE share the same fundamental values. This led to a creative exchange beyond the relationship of architect and client, which is revealed by the exhibition. Both companies perceive their designs as being timeless, in the sense of holistic sustainability. Characteristic of both houses is their clear and bold signa- ture. Top quality standards in the form of high-quality materials and careful design and production in both disciplines ensure a long service life.
„Die Kunst der richtigen Distanz“. Architekturkritik im Spiegel des Werkes von gmp / “gmp, von Gerkan Marg und Partner, Die Kunst der richtigen Distanz, The art of the right distance, München, 2016”. Architectural criticism mirrored in the work of gmp, Munich [München], Germany, Architekturgalerie, 30 september / 11 november 2016

The exhibition “The art of the right distance” opens in the Architekturgalerie on 29 September. It traces half a century of architectural criticism, using a selection of buildings by the architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partners (gmp) as examples. From 30 September to 11 November 2016, current architecture photographs by Marcus Bredt are being shown alongside statements taken from historical reviews in newspapers and journals. The architectural critic and journalist Dirk Meyhöfer and Meinhard von Gerkan and Volkwin Marg, founding partners of gmp, will speak at the opening.

The latest exhibition of the architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partners (gmp) is premiering in Munich’s Architekturgalerie: From 30 September to 11 November “The art of the right distance” brings together time and space through the medium of architectural criticism. A significant selection from the oeuvre of gmp comprising nearly 400 international projects is presented: from the fading modernism of the 1960s through ecological and participatory movements and the postmodern era to the globalized architecture of the present. Contemporary photographs created through the extremely revealing lens of Marcus Bredt are juxtaposed with critical reviews from newspapers and journals of former days. gmp founding partners Meinhard von Gerkan and Volkwin Marg, as well as Dirk Meyhöfer, architectural critic and journalist, will speak at the opening on 29 September. In addition, the book documentation on which the exhibition is based, “The art of the right distance. Architectural criticism mirrored in the work of the architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partners”, published by Niggli Verlag, will be presented to the public.

Thumbs up? Thumbs down? Architectural criticism has never kept things as simple as that. As with any good criticism, it is less the critic’s final evaluation or judgment of taste that is of interest, but rather his well-founded justification. For the critical classification of architecture, in accordance with the public character of each building, a broad range of factors is opened up by which it can be judged. Just as architecture is much more than the art of construction, its assessment must also be seen as a separate branch of cultural and social criticism. Depending on how a critic positions himself and which media are available to him, he also sets other priorities: He can see himself as a mediator who explains the object to the public, he can focus his attention on the historical and theoretical contextualization of architecture, or he can assume the role of a corrective of the architect. If nothing else, architectural criticism is bound closely to time and follows constantly changing social trends and architectural fashions.

The exhibition “The art of the right distance” takes all those detailed specifications into account. The result is the symbiosis of two dimensions that pose the question of spatial and temporal distance that is necessary in order to be able to experience architecture adequately and holistically.
