THE TALLEST BUILDING IN MILAN
May 8, 2009
Today the construction of the "Altra Sede" (Other Office) of the Lombardy Region rises to 127,40 metres, officially substituting the Pirelli skyscraper in the primacy of the highest building in Milan. Gio Ponti and Pier Luigi Nervi's buiding in 1960 had been the first skyscraper to pass the height of the "Madunina" (the statue of the Virgin Mary on the top of the Cathedral of Milan), since even the BBPR's Velasca Tower, built two years before the Pirelli Building, was two metres shorter than the hieght of the statue.
By the end of the year, the tower designed by Pei Cobb Freed & Partners will be 166 metres tall, but this new primacy will not last long as it will be passed by the CityLife towers, designed by Zaha Hadid, Daniel Libeskind and Arata Isozaki for the ex-Fair area.
Roberto Formigoni, Governor of the Lombardy Region, says "The construction of the "Altra Sede" is part of the revival programme for the city of Milan which was decided a few years ago by the Region and the municipality. This is the first work that will be completed, which proves that great deeds can be done. We are not condemned to decline or to remaining still in passed grandeurs.
At 9:30 p.m., an altitude stone indicating 127,40 metres, the point corresponding to the hieght of the Pirelli Building, will be placed on top of the buiding site of the Pei-Cobb Building."
The event will be signaled by a raser beam, emphasizing the height that has been reached and it will be visible on screens placed on the large square of the Pirelli Building and on the Belvedere on the 31st floor.
At the end of the construction work, an 85cm tall copy of the Madonnina will be placed on the top of the buiding, just like the one placed on the top of the Pirelli Building in 1960, so to keep the tradition of the Madonnina in the highest spot of the city.
"This tradition," adds Formigoni, " must be continued, conserved and valorized since the Madonnina is a symbol, not solely religious, in which Milan's population identifies itself."
