BIOGRAPHICAL NOTES

Born in 1937, Loris Macci studied in Florence where he received his degree in 1961 under the advisership of Adalberto Libera and Ludovico Quaroni, discussing a thesis on the European University in Florence. Full professor of architectural design since 1976, and professor of urban planning, he lives and works in Florence, combining his teaching activity in the Faculty of Architecture with a constant and committed operational research conducted with his participation in major national and international architecture competitions, as well as with realisations in Italy and abroad.

In the course of his years of training, he often worked with Italo Gamberini – the Maestro of the S. Maria Novella Station in Florence – and with him realised the Clinic of Veterinary Medicine in Pisa, the office buildings of the Soc. Fondiaria in Florence and Foggia, the Multifunctional Building in Montecatini Terme (Premio IN/ARCH 1966) RAI-TV headquarters in Florence (Premio IN/ARCH 1968)1; other projects and competitions have recently been drawn up, coordinating work groups with colleagues and teachers of the Italian Schools of Architecture and Engineering.
Particularly significant among his less recent projects and realisations, are the new bell tower for the Church of San Giuseppe a Capanne – Pisa, the industrial plant for SAP-Loba in Trent, the «Borsato» Tower in Bassano del Grappa, the National Assembly of Parliament in Mogadishu (Somalia), the Ritchard multifunctional complex in Lugano-Paradiso (Switzerland), the Solaria tourist-hotel installation at Mazzin-Canazei in Val di Fassa, the Fire Brigade headquarters of Florence-Ovest, the new headquarters of the Commune of Arma di Taggia, the school complexes for the middle and upper schools of Empoli and Imperia, the former Lebole Multipurpose Centre in Empoli, «le corti» Residential Centre of Prato-Grignano.
Winner of numerous architecture competitions (including the State Archives – Premio U.I.A. – and the Business Centre of Florence), he has also realised the complex of Comandini and Lugaresi Professional Institutes in Cesena, the reorganisation of the Stadium of Florence and the enlargement of the Stadium of Empoli, the multipurpose school complex of Savignano sul Rubicone, the reconversion of the former sugar factory of Borgo San Giacomo into a cultural complex and the new bridge over the Po at Volano in Ferrara (Recommended for the Premio IN/ARCH 1990); he also designed the university hospital at Larissa in Greece, a tourist-spa complex at Eilath (Israel), and a medical-tourism installation at Nanjing (China).
Of the architecture competitions of these past years, let us cite those for the library of Casalecchio sul Reno and for the new Forteguerriana Library of Pistoia, the competition for the church of Santi Cirillo e Metodio in Rome, the competition for the Consiag headquarters in Prato, the competition for the Technical-Scientific Pole of Ferrara and – among the competitions by invitation – those for the Church of San Marcellino at Falconara Marittima, for the refurbishment of the old centre of Cesenatico, for a multipurpose centre in Kiel, Germany, and for the Kansai Library in Japan.
In addition to the Museo dell’intrecciatura in Castelsardo Castle and the Museo del centenario Edison in the Bertini Centrale at Cornate sull’Adda, his museum achievements include projects for the Museo della Cultura materiale in the ex Mulino Guasti in Florence, the Museo della Cantieristica in the ex Cantieri Picchiotti at Limite sull’Arno (Florence), the Museo Nazionale di Storia Naturale in the ex Macelli area in Florence and – recently – his consultancy for the new Museo di Scienze Planetarie in Prato, the Museo della Natura in the Giardino dei Semplici in Florence, the competition for the Grand Egyptian Museum in Cairo and – presently underway – the Parco dei Musei and the new Museo di Storia Naturale in Pavia.
In the Florence area, in several stages, he designed an Athletics Stadium, the new ANAS Compartmental Centre of Tuscany, the multipurpose Sports Park of Firenze-Ovest, the new Olympic Swimming Centre in Florence and, recently, the Guide Plan for the Florence node of the Alta Velocità rail network (with Bruno Zevi), and the three pilot solutions of the new AV Station, and the urban development and architectural plan by a school group in the ex Mercato del Bestiame area, for which he offered consultancy for the plan and its realisation.
His most recent projects – both completed and in the pipeline – include the new Management Headquarters of Cerestar Italia in Rovigo – Castelmassa, the new Italian General Headquarters of Eridania Béghin-Say in Ferrara, the Villa La Vedetta Hotel in Florence, the new City Library of Portoferraio, the Bus Terminal for the interurban bus lines of Ferrara, the ex Sima Multifunctional Centre «al torrione di mezzogiorno» in Iesi, the multifunctional complex and Warner Village multiplex cinema in Florence, a model composting installation at Borgo San Lorenzo-Florence, and the new university headquarters in Palazzo dei Serviti in Florence. Current projects involving universities include the Guide Plan for the Historical Centre of Portoferraio, the Guide Plan and pilot plans for laying out the sea Dock and the upriver Dock at Bellaria-Igea Marina, the Guide Plan and pilot projects of the Riccione-Ovest areas.
His projects, competition projects and realisations have been published in daily newspapers, books and monographs, presented in exhibitions, and reviewed in specialised reviews (Architettura, Casabella, Domus, Area, Paramento, Costruire, Controspazio, L’Arca, L’Arca Plus, Spazio e Società, Annali dell’Architettura italiana contemporanea, Techniques & Architecture, Almanacco della Architettura italiana, and others).
An academician of the Arti del Disegno per la Classe di Architettura, in the Seventies he directed the Istituto di Ricerca Architettonica of the University of Florence; his teaching and designing activities are joined by consultancy and participation in examination boards, research groups and scientific committees, including those presently underway for Portoferraio, Florence, Bellaria-Igea Marina and Riccione. Summoned by Giovanni Michelucci himself, from 1983 to 1995 he sat on the scientific committee of the review, «la nuova città», and took part in the Fondazione Michelucci.

He has authored articles, essays and books, including “Lo Schema – Chiarificazione di un linguaggio”, L.E.F., “Piano e progetto nella costruzione della città”, L.E.F., “Materiali per un progetto d’architettura”, Alinea, «Progettare per la città», Alinea, «Architettura e civiltà delle torri», Edifir, “Verso la città profonda”, Alinea, “Centri multi funzionali in Europa”, Alinea, and «Nuove stagioni della città», Electa, the latter resulting from a long series of study trips in search of the “new architecture” in the main cities of the Old and New Worlds.
