DESCRIPTION

.
Albert Chase McArthur, Arizona Biltmore Resort, Phoenix, Frank Lloyd Wright, Shining, Stanley KubrickIt is a widespread belief that this hotel complex was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, while in reality the designer who was son of one of the investors, had only been strongly inspired by the work of he who had been his teacher at university. In a letter published in The Architectural Record in 1930, Wright himself denied paternity of the building, though expressing admiration for the work.

When construction ended, the entire property was taken over by chewing gum magnate William Wrigley, Jr., because the building costs had practically doubled compared to the initial cost estimate.

Today, the resort belongs to the Waldorf Astoria chain.

ADDITIONS AND DIGRESSIONS

The Architectural Record, 1930
"All I have done in connection with the building of the Arizona Biltmore, near Phoenix, I have done for Albert McArthur himself at his sole request, and for none other. Albert McArthur is the architect of that building -- all attempts to take the credit for that performance from him are gratuitous and beside the mark. But for him, Phoenix would have had nothing like the Biltmore, and it is my hope that he may be enabled to give Phoenix many more beautiful buildings as I believe him entirely capable of doing."

Frank Lloyd Wright
