ANNOTATIONS

In 1858 the Grand Duke Leopoldo II appointed a deputation in charge of executing the facade of the cathedral; the first stone was laid on April 22, 1860 by Vittorio Emanuele II, King of Italy, but the works began only in 1875. Gottfried Semper was part of the jury that chose the project by Emilio De Fabris.
The designer, who had foreseen a tricuspid crowning, died in 1883, when the works were still in progress. In that same year, two solutions were proposed for the crowning: the spire one and the basilica one (always based on a design by Emilio De Fabris). Both were built and it was the citizens who chose the basilica.
The works were completed by the architect Luigi Del Moro, a collaborator of the designer.
