DESCRIPTION

Oscar Niemeyer Hotel Puerta America“Here, then, is what I wanted to tell you of my architecture. I created it with courage and idealism, but also with an awareness of the fact that what is important is life, friends and attempting to make this unjust world a better place in which to live.” Oscar Niemeyer. The Curves of Time: The memoirs of Oscar Niemeyer.

On the verge of turning 100 years old, Oscar Niemeyer is the last survivor of Modernism. He is a fascinating figure, prominent for being responsible for the planning and construction of the city of Brasilia, the imposing capital of Brazil. His is an architecture with a marked artistic bent, with enormous formal wealth and which, according to many critics, includes the poetic values of the Brazilian culture. He has been the recipient of the Pritzker Prize (1988) and the Prince of Asturias Award for the Arts (1989). For the Hotel Puerta América he has designed an iron sculpture in the shape of a sickle, approximately five metres high to be placed in the adjacent park.
