DESCRIPTION

Moshe Safdie Marina Bay Sands SingaporeThe Integrated Resort is a microcosm of a city. It is a district, not a project. It must possess all the attributes that have made cities great. Historic cities always possessed a clear hierarchy of urban place – Greek and Roman cities were organized about the Cardo Maximus and Decomanus, the monumental axes; and Chinese cities likewise, were structured around classical constructs of the courtyard and the wall. The street, which has always held an important function in urban situations as the principal urban space of a city, together with the agora, piazza, galleria and courtyard ordered the city, gave it a sense of orientation and location and were the focus of civic life.

The Marina Bay Sands is similarly organized about a contemporary equivalent of principal axes. A slightly curved north/south promenade / grand arcade traverses the entire complex, crossed by two east/west public spines, “view corridors” which connect destinations on either side of the spine. This new type of urban place integrates the Waterfront Promenade with the grand multi-leveled retail arcade, combining civic space, shopping, indoor and outdoor spaces endowed with city skyline views, daylight and plant life, and providing an abundance and variety of activities. It is a place that is vibrant and dynamic, a place that transforms from hour to hour, from day to night - it is here that the imaginings of a global city become a reality.
Urban Connections and Spatial Organisation
To further enhance the framework of seamless urban connections, each of the principal axes powerfully extends into the surrounding city fabric. The grand arcade flows into the Bayfront Promenade to the south and across the new pedestrian bridge to Marina Centre to the north. The Bayfront Promenade provides a continuous pedestrian connection around the Marina Bay waterfront with links to future attractions. The east/west view corridors physically and visually connect the Marina Bay waterfront with the Marina Bay Sands Hotel, and the Gardens-by-the-Bay. Parking extends under the grand arcade, providing direct access into the lower level shopping by extension of the elevator and escalator systems into the car park. Thus, the grand arcade is served by direct pedestrian access at each level.
Ceremonial Event Piazza
We have pursued a strategy which will make the Event Piazza vital and alive at all times – it is positioned on axis with the view corridor and Bayfront RTS station and integrated with the upper and lower promenades and the grand arcade. Fifty percent of the piazza area is screw-jack lifts that can be raised and lowered, making it possible to vary levels and create a stepping topography as required. Also, Fifty percent of the piazza is shaded and sheltered by an overhanging giant canopy while use of the promenade area immediately adjacent increases the available area, providing for a greater range of programme opportunities.
A Concept of Layered Parks
The landscape network serves to further reinforce the urban connections and is designed as a series of layered gardens that extends the tropical garden landscape from Marina City Park towards the Bayfront. As seen from downtown, there is first the lavishly landscaped Bayfront Promenade extending from one end of the project to the other. Set back from the water’s edge and 20 metres (66 feet) higher is the Sky Promenade, providing another public park overlooking downtown, extending across the entire length of the project and extending east/west across the landscaped link to the Hotel complex and beyond to the future Gardens-by-the-Bay.
The SkyPark
Moshe Safdie Marina Bay Sands SingaporeThe hotel SkyPark, shielded from the winds and lavishly planted with trees at 170 metres (560 feet) above the sea, provides an ideal setting for pools, spas, restaurants, gardens and a public observatory. This generous 2-1/2 acre expanse of hotel SkyPark is greater in size than the largest aircraft carrier, cantilevers 65m past the easternmost tower and provides unequalled 360-degree views of the city, Marina Bay and the sea. The Hotel Sky Park, forming the city’s gateway, celebrates the Garden City theme that has been the underpinning of Singapore’s urban design strategy, admired around the world.
ArtScience Museum
Moshe Safdie Marina Bay Sands SingaporeIt is the unity of the arts and the sciences, the common denominators that connect the nature of all human creativity and the long-term benefits of such integrative thinking that lead to the concept of a museum devoted to the exploration of both art and science, and the connections between. Its exuberant forms suggest the unique offerings of the museum within. The architecture is evocative, expressive of the museum’s setting and its underlying theme of earth, water and sky. The building offers a sequence of provocative galleries and public spaces.

The ArtScience Museum is designed as a multi-level structure, extending two levels below the promenade level, as well as two gallery levels above. The entrance of the museum is at street/promenade level and interconnected to every component of Marina Bay Sands via the grand arcade and promenade. The lobby level affords a 270 - degree expansive view towards the downtown and the bay, accommodating orientation, reception, and a café. Ascending above the lobby level into the seemingly floating structure, accessed by escalators and elevators, are two levels of stacked galleries. These galleries open to dramatic views to every part of the city, and are endowed with daylight (fully controllable for flexible exhibits), while skylights also punctuate through the promontory, bringing daylight to the galleries at the lower levels.

The dish-like roof surface of the museum acts as a water collector, draining towards the centre where a natural fountain is formed. During the day, each of the petals in the dish-like roof is a fountain. When it rains, all water falling on the roof collects into a waterfall cascading through the museum atrium into the pool below.
Crystal Pavilions
Adjacent to the Waterfront Promenade, located directly in the bay, are situated two “glass pavilions” which connect directly to the retail spaces through underwater passages. The glass and steel facade geometries reflect the water and sky, as well as the surrounding building structures. By night, the lit interiors become beacons of activity as viewed from the city beyond.
Casino
Situated in the center of the project is one of the few ‘atrium style’ casinos in the world. Four levels of gaming and entertainment occupy one singular space, the casino is a collective environment connected and crowned by an undulating ceiling that floats beneath the arched roof structure. The centerpiece of the casino is an immense freeform chandelier suspended 100 feet above the main gaming floor and comprised of 132,000 Swarovski crystals and 16,500 LEDs. The chandelier is visible from all levels and serves as the main focal point and orientation device within the grand scale of the casino.
Theatres
The two performance theatres are positioned on the northeast section of the project with a large window-like entrance from the retail arcade that allows the drums of the theatre to be seen from the retail arcade and the pedestrian promenade.
MICE Facilities – Meeting, Incentives, Convention and Exhibition
The MICE facilities, totaling over 98,000 square metres (one million square feet) of public space is comprised of exhibition floors on two levels, numerous and variously-sized meeting rooms on two levels, and at the uppermost level, enjoying a clear span and open views of the city and the city promenade, is the unique ballroom – the largest in Asia, accommodating up to 7,500 people at a banquet event.
Hotel Complex
Moshe Safdie Marina Bay Sands SingaporeThe hotel complex comprises three individual towers and is crowned by a 10,000 square metre (108,000 square foot) hotel SkyPark that acts as a gateway to Singapore. Here, the objective of porosity and permeability mandated by the URA takes on a powerful symbolic gesture of welcome towards the sea. Seen from the ships anchored at sea, the two great urban windows created by the towers and hotel SkyPark frame the views towards Downtown. East-facing rooms enjoy roof gardens and generously planted terraces that climb up the building in a series of hanging gardens, extending the park ambience. West-facing rooms enjoy a view of the Downtown.

The three towers of the hotel, totaling 3,400 rooms possess two elements that connect and unify them. The first is a continuous glazed atrium lobby extending through the length of the site and the second is the aforementioned 2-1/2 acre hotel SkyPark. The east facade of the hotel towers features continuous balconies of planted bougainvillea.
