DESCRIZIONE

The Architectural Concept
The delicate landscape where we had to work proved to be a very challenging foundation for our work and required a very carefully planned project design. We had to make the building blend in with the landscape and make the bodega look natural on the land by blurring the limits between the landscape and the building construction.
Based on this principle and the dimensioning resulting from the production information provided, we defined warehouse and cellar sizes in relation to the agro-industrial bodega area and started to design a plant which fitted in with the desired area. The plant’s size and dimension was adjusted to the initial intention which was to locate it on the hillock, but it was necessary to avoid that the presence of these bodies or warehouses was excessive. We had to build the bodega into the slope, making the warehouses underground and only revealing those sections which need natural light and external contact. As a result, the majority of the building constructed would be hidden, thereby maintaining the vegetation layer continuity and providing the bodega with an exceptional thermal and acoustic balance (road and railway).
Let’s analyse this matter. We observe the steep banks, and we note that we are used to seeing how the boulders emerge from them and can be seen.
Thus, in the steep bank above the vineyard, from the hillock which overlooks it, the bodega rises up, appearing like a jagged wall of big boulders revolving around each other and letting past the light.
Walking around Darien
The approach to Darien with the bodega facade in the distance mounted on the steep bank overlooking the vineyard could be unsettling for someone who does not know the significance of such an expressive and abstract formalization.
When we go inside, things seem to change. Everything becomes a rationality exercise that connects spaces and passageways, changing atmospheres, going from the bright hall to a sequential darkness which descends to the cores of the earth which protect the bodega per se. It is a dimly lit area, dark and mysterious, a panoramic enclosure where we perceive the red winemaking room, wine-coloured, a tone which contrasts with the shiny stainless steel vats. Then the cask room, also dimly lit, where we find only casks and the imposing arched ceiling beams which are shaped just like the casks. After that, the ageing or bottling room, with an atmosphere that urges respect and silence: the wine is resting and it needs quiet.
