DESCRIPTION

La Peña is one of the areas that suffered the most from the Bilbao postindustrial restructuring. The district keeps its shape of a narrow and curved bank between an open cast mine and an abrupt natural slope, a hillside, that is, profoundly affected by industrialization. The sport complex must support the social transformation of the area and it is actually the only public facility.
The lot is a reduced and irregular piece of terrain, almost residual, that opens a way between the rear and unaligned facade heights of a a group of housings and the almost vertical wall of a natural hillside, in which there are many train tracks and highways. A new commuter train station and the metallic structure of the existent pediment constitute the estremes of the lot and generate different slopes.
Between the inner and outer skin there is a boundary space adapted to the site complexity, the entrance hall, that organizes the flow, showing visitors the vertical distribution of the building, and, in a geographical region with so low lighting levels, it introduces a zenithal illumination that fills all the spaces with the material strength of light in an ex mining neighbourhood, where light never came in.
