DESCRIPTION

.
The statue was built in France, on the proposal of the historian Edouard de Laboulaye, and donated to the United States on the occasion of the first centenary of independence.

It was designed by the sculptor Frédéric-Auguste Bartholdi who asked his "master" Eugene Emmanuel Viollet-le-Duc to design the internal iron structure; in 1879, following the death of Viollet-le-Duc, Gustave-Alexandre Eiffel took over the design of the structure.

The transport of the 350 pieces that make up the statue took place by ship.

The base was built from 1883 to 1884 and the statue was inaugurated on October 28, 1886 by the president of the United States, Grover Cleveland.
